ZEERO FRIDGE Cradle to Cradle

What is the problem?
Refugee camps have limited access to electricity 
often this causes food to spoil, leading to food waste or illnesses 

Why Does this matter?

One Third of food is wasted in the Middle East.
As a result, 30% of water and electricity is wasted

Zeero is a modernized Version of ancient Zeer pot technology, using the evaporative cooling process to keep food cold. Our design streamlines the primitive fridge to help our users get the coldest results with the least effort and energy

IDEATION

In this phase, we focused on defining the overall shapes of our design. We knew from the start that we wanted it to be modular and incorporate an efficient irrigation system to enhance functionality. With these goals in mind, we began exploring a variety of forms and stacking techniques to ensure flexibility, adaptability, and ease of use. This exploration allowed us to experiment with different configurations and identify solutions that balanced both aesthetics and practicality.

CAD Iterations 

In this phase, we continued with form building and started considering manufacturing and irrigation systems. We explored two different types of systems but ultimately decided on the irrigation system shown below.

We decided that we preferred the form where the components interlock, so we chose to move forward and improve that design.

This irrigation system involved the user pouring water into each handle or spout, which wouldn't streamline our product, and would lead to this action making the process redundant and tiresome.

This irrigation system involved a more streamlined process, where tubes would connect each fridge and when the user pours water into the highest spout it would distribute evenly. However, this process would limit the versatility of the product.

How does it work?

Zeero employs the metod of the original zeer pot, the ancient fridge from the Indus Civilization. Dating back to 3000BC, the steps have remained the same. Simpley wet the sandlayer and lest the air do the rest

Step 1: Water is poured on domed lid, water flows into slits and saturates sand layer

Step 2: Water evaporates from sand layer into hot and dry air 

Step 3: Air inside Zeerp is cooled
